Try This Next Time

Someone once told me that the definition of “crazy” is doing the same thing over and over and expecting to get a different result. This holds true in a struggling marriage. The argument topics may change, but our reactions stay the same day after day, month after month, and year after year. Next time you get into an argument, why don’t you try reacting in a different way? For example, guys, act in a loving manner toward your wife and ladies, act in a respectful manner toward your husband. Then watch what happens. Comment here.

Thanksgiving Gratitude

No Blog on Thursday or Friday

We will be closed on Thursday, November 26 and Friday, November 27, 2009 to allow our employees time to be with their familes. We will resume the Drivers Wellness blog on Monday, November 20, 2009.

Happy Thanksgiving

The holidays are approaching. Everywhere I go, I see decorations going up. When I was a kid learning about the holidays at school, we heard stories about the hardships the Pilgrims endured the first winter in America. They survived because of the compassion of Native Americans who taught them to plant corn and celebrated the harvest with a Thanksgiving feast.

In this down economy, with drivers losing jobs and trucking firms closing up sometimes it’s easier to complain. However, I have not seen a mass exodus of people leaving this country to go somewhere better. This is still a pretty good place to live. Find time to appreciate what we have and the bounty of provision given to us this Thanksgiving. Comment here.

Break the Cycle

I once heard a speaker explain why so many have marital difficulties. He stated that somewhere within the marriage there was a lack of love on the husband’s part or a lack of respect on the wife’s part. This started a vicious cycle that we can’t break out of. You see, without love, a wife’s reaction to her husband will be lacking in respect. And when a husband gets treated without respect, he will react without love to his wife. See the cycle? Stop it! Become proactive and respond to your mate with what they need. Try it. It works well. Comment here.

Best is Better than Perfect

What do you expect from your family? Do you expect perfection? Perfection will leave you dissatisfied with their performance which will only lead to other issues. Let me encourage you to strive towards what is best for your family instead of what’s perfect. The best will lead you toward caring in specific ways for each individual in your family. This will allow you to love them and train them in a way that will satisfy everyone. Expect the best. Comment here.

Don’t Be Overcome by Life’s Unfairness

Sometimes life isn’t fair. Like it or not, it’s reality. At times, it seems some people experience more unfairness than others. Some of us must deal with serious, chronic illness -both mental and physical. Some are saddled with difficulties, through no fault of their own, that make it very challenging to simply live. So now that we have determined life isn’t fair, what are you going to do to overcome this unfairness and have the best life you can under the circumstances? Want to talk about it? Comment here.

Are We Communicating?

Quite often, my wife and I have conversations that don’t make sense. Although I’ve listened intently, somewhere along the line, I missed something. On the other hand, when I tell my wife things I’m sure I’ve explained it thoroughly, but it gets messed up too. So, what’s the problem? Where does this go wrong? Well, I’ve come to the conclusion that men and women think and speak differently. “Really” you say, like you didn’t know this already. I have also come to the conclusion that neither one of us is right or wrong, just different. So knowing this, next time try to speak and listen to your spouse like they think and speak. It will help you to understand each other. Comment here.

Go Easy on Your Answers

Ever have someone so upset with you that they started yelling? I have. What do you do when through no fault of yours, the load arrives late and your receiver is giving you the what for? My natural tendency is to defend myself and get louder as my verbal assailant gets louder. We both try to out-talk the other in order to get our point across. The usual result is hard feelings and maybe a lost customer. I’ve heard of drivers being barred from delivering because of contentions with the shipper. While our reaction is very natural, it’s just the wrong approach for these situations. There is a better way. Would you like to know more?Comment here.

Discipline versus Punishment

There is a difference between discipline and punishment when it comes to your children. Anybody can impose a punishment. It takes no leadership qualities at all to “dish” it out. Usually, we punish our kids only when we are angry at what they did. However, it takes a real man to discipline his children. Discipline should be filled with love and concern for the direction of our kid’s lives, not merely focused on our anger about the bad act they just committed. Temper your anger and discipline them correctly. Let us know if we can help. Comment here.

Driving is the Only Thing I Know

Many drivers have told me, “Driving is the only thing I know.” I usually hear this whenever the driver feels their livelihood is going to be taken away. They feel a bit desperate. While this statement may be true for any driver, it doesn’t mean that one cannot learn something new. Maybe you can learn a new trade? Then you’d have two areas of skills to work with. It is not so much how many things we know; it is what we do with the skills we have. Want to talk about it? Contact us.Comment here.

Hope for Loneliness

Loneliness is one of the emotions that attack many truck drivers. Some of the factors that cause this are spending hour after hour behind the wheel fighting traffic and other times on a long stretch of highway with only your truck for company. When you get to your destination, you are alone to deal with any problems that arise, such as the shipper not being ready for several hours, or a receiver rejecting a load. You solve all those problems and try to explain them to your employer, and it almost seems like you have to defend yourself in a court of law. You get to a truck stop to fuel up and get a meal, and the waitress just had to deal with some belligerent customer and is not in a good mood. Sounds like the end of a perfect day. But you know what? There is hope. There is something to look forward to. Contact us to find out more. Comment here.

Interest Can Either Work for or Against You

I would like to talk about the power of debt versus the power of saving. The key word to understand is “interest”. It can either work for you or against you (of course the preferred being for you). If you overspend by $80 each month for five years, you would have overspent by $4,800. If you charged it, in order to pay this off in five additional years at 18%, you would actually pay back a total of $7,485. That’s the power of debt. If you save $1,000 per year for twelve years, you’ll have saved $12,000. If you invest it, the same amount after the same time period would be worth $24,672 with 6% interest. That’s the power of saving. Get the idea. Start saving today. Let us know if we can help. Comment here.

Care for Others

It’s very easy to put our own needs first in a culture that embraces “Me First” as a way of life. The result is our society is full of uncared for kids, wives, husbands and parents. We are reaping what we have sown. However, if everyone put others first by meeting their needs, we’d all be cared for.

It’s almost guaranteed that those you love will mess up or make mistakes at times and not meet your needs. It’s very important that you show them you still care for them even then. Caring for others cannot be based upon their performance alone. Express your care not only verbally, but by your actions everyday to the people in your life. Comment here.

Finding Our Way

Today, it is much easier to find our way on the highway. There was a time when that was not the case. Roads were not well-marked, and sometimes were impassible for trucks. Even if you called the company you were going to, you’d get someone who was totally unaware of truck restrictions since they only knew the way by car. Your best source was someone who had actually been there before. Eventually, road maps and special atlases suitable for truckers were developed. Now, we have satellites encircling the globe that enable GPS technology to locate not only where we are but how to get where we want to go.

For life’s ‘highway’, there are guides to get us through without getting lost. Want to know more? Contact us. Comment here.

Quiet, Please!

We live in a noisy world. All day long, the engine hums as you tool down the highway. The radio is turned on, and the CB crackles with someone wanting to talk. The restaurants we eat in have music playing, diners chatting and sometimes the dishes clatter. I have gotten into the habit of eating my breakfast while watching the morning news on TV. The news, weather and local road conditions are repeated every ten minutes. During that time, several ads blast at least 3 decibels louder than the news broadcast. One day, I had heard enough and decided to turn it off. The silence was golden. Every day, we have good opportunities to enjoy a quiet time. Try turning the noise off and enjoy the silence. Need ideas for what you can do during quiet times? Ask us. Comment here.

Lasting Relationships Start With Commitment

Today, couples try to live together without getting married to avoid the requirement of commitment. Doing so, however, short circuits the intimacy between them that is supposed to beautiful. Present or Presence

As a truck driver, being present at all of your family functions is very difficult. In fact, being present is not really what it’s all about when it comes to your family relationships. That’s because even though someone is physically present, they may be so preoccupied that it’s as if they’re “not there”, if you know what I mean. Give your family your presence by showing your interest and love for them even though you are not at home. Call them up just to find out how they are doing or to let them know that you love them. Generally speaking, your family understands why you can’t be there all the time. Your attention or presence is really what they need. Comment here.

Your Dreams Need Financial Planning

Do you have any financial dreams or goals? Maybe you want to get your truck paid off quickly, retire at a certain age or travel in something other than an 18 wheeler. Usually financial dreams or goals are closely related to your life. Spend some time identifying what they are. Then write them down and put together a plan to reach them. Start with getting out of debt and then begin saving cash towards your goals. You’ll be well on your way to reaching them. Call us if we can help. That’s Not Fair!

Life is often not fair, no matter how indignant we feel about it. I know of drivers who were working faithfully for their company one moment that suddenly became stranded far from home the next. Their company, struggling financially, declared bankruptcy and abruptly closed its doors. The drivers were not only left without a job, they were left without money to get back home or the wages that they had already earned. How could that be right?

There’s an old story that discusses unfairness. All the workers were paid the same wages no matter how long they had worked that day. When the ones who were hired in the morning complained about it, the employer reminded them that they’d agreed to work for the pay that they’d received and that they were only envious because he was being generous to the new workers that were hired near the day’s end. The moral is it’s better to be content with what you have than to complain about what you don’t have. Finding reasons to be grateful when faced with unfair circumstances will help you “fair” better through them. Tell us what you think. Comment here.

Sometimes You Have to Wait

Even though computers have become faster, have you noticed that we have become more impatient. My wife turns on the computer and expects it to boot up immediately. Then she complains about our “slow” computer. Impatience shows up when we stand in line at the fuel desk (or any other line we stand in). We wonder why there is only one slow clerk available. I seldom shop at a particular store because they do not mind making customers wait! Remember the expression “Good things come to those who wait?” Impatience can give us second best and even undesired results. Sometimes it’s actually better to wait. Would you like to comment?
