Hometown and Current City

There is a section on some of the social network websites that allow members to record their “hometown” and “current city”. Obviously, the hometown is where they were born and the current city is where they now reside. The average distance between those two cities within the United States is four hundred and eighty seven miles. That’s a pretty big distance which indicates that many people have moved away from their hometowns and are now living far away from their roots. Maybe this is one of the reasons these social websites have grown to the size they are today. How far away are you from your hometown? Have you left your roots? This can be very difficult and lonely at times. Let us know your thoughts. Comment here.

If You Don’t Have Anything Nice To Say…

Recently, the media covered a story about a government worker who had been fired from her position because of some racial statements she allegedly had made. The accusations ran fast and wild. Within three days, this government employee was verbally abused, lost her job, and was labeled as a racist who didn’t deserve to work at that level within the government. After the entire story had been revealed, she was found not to be a racist and was actually helping those she had been accused of hurting. The moral of the story is that our tongues can cause damage and can get ahead of our minds. Let me encourage you not to speak unless you have something nice to say, and also, if it’s not true, don’t say it. Have you hurt someone with your words lately? Let us know if we can help. Crossing the Line

I will watch or listen to as many baseball games as I possibly can, since I’m such a big fan of it. My wife, however, sometimes gets annoyed with me and I need to be careful that I don’t allow my attraction to baseball to overrule my relationship with her. I recently read a story about a retired baseball player who had a temporary injunction filed against him by his wife after a domestic dispute at their home in Tampa, Florida. His wife stated that they got into an argument and her husband crossed the line between discussion and abuse. Whether it’s verbal or physical abuse, it’s all wrong. There is so much abuse within households today that goes unnoticed. Why do we treat the ones we love so badly? If you struggle with any type of abuse, please call us. Don’t let another day go by. Works Well With Others

Working with others takes cooperation and patience. One trucker was having a bad day as he was trying to get a piece of heavy equipment loaded onto his truck. He was in such a state of mind, he would not heed the advice of those trying to work with him. At the end of the day, the equipment was damaged and he was held responsible. We should be interested in finding the best way in a situation, not in having things our own way. Consider this the next time you are trying to work your way through a relationship or work issue. Travel Woes

I recently heard that some frequent airline travelers have become discontent with the direction the airline travel industry is going. They claim that many passengers recline seats in their laps, they can no longer get an in-flight hot meal, and travelers, in general, have become inconsiderate and downright rude. If they were to travel a mile in your shoes for a week, they would soon see how discontent they are with their travel woes and actually experience some real stress in their lives. Drivers face stress all day, every day, all year long; things like road congestion, certain hand gestures, no in-truck hot meal, and no sleep, just to mention a few. Stress is a real part of a driver’s life and if you need help handling it, please let us know. Comment here.

Fellowship of Friends

There are several social internet sites available today in which people have become involved to help with their need for social connection. The downside to this is that many have allowed these sites to consume a lot of their time and energy, in place of getting together and spending time with an actual person. One site has recorded over four hundred thousand events posted each day which people are involved in. If we would put half as much effort into the everyday, face-to-face relationships in our lives, we’d have a fellowship of friends that could never be broken. Who do you share the events of your life with? Let us know if we can help. Comment here.

What Are You Worth?

It’s time for the baseball trade deadline and for football players to report to their training camps. Along with this, there seems to be an all too familiar ring in the air which revolves around the all-mighty dollar. Some players want a minimum of one million dollars for the 2010 season, or they won’t play. Some have even threatened to sit out the first ten games of the football season if they don’t get what they want, and have been quoted as saying they are “so angry” for not being rewarded as they think they should be. First of all, the amount these players make is baffling, and secondly, many of them seem to be extremely self-centered. What would happen if truckers acted this way? What is the center of your focus? Do you feel you are worth more than you receive? Let us know what you think our focus should be. Comment here.

Pay Attention

While phoning a local trucking company recently, I listened to an up-to-date recording for drivers regarding safety tips, the location of a road check, and other helpful information. This is a great idea for the drivers of that particular company, if they take the time to call in, listen, and then heed the advice. Very similar to our overall wellbeing, we may hear all kinds of tips and counsel about getting enough rest, keeping our priorities straight, working through conflicts, and so on. Yet if we make the choice to ignore the good information that comes our way, we cannot expect to be well, physically or emotionally. Pay attention – it’s worth it. Comment here.

Mind Your Manners

USA Today published a story that was titled “Manners? What Manners?” It focused upon the growing number of stressors people face while flying on various commercial airlines. The first sentence of the article read “As flying gets more stressful, some passengers turn rude.” Hasn’t stress and rudeness of travelers been around for quite some time; maybe not always in the air, but most certainly on the highways? Have you witnessed this type of stress while driving? Most drivers face this every day of their lives. How do you handle it? What do you do? Let us know if you need help. Comment here.

Facebook Friends Versus Real Friends

You may or may not be a Facebook fan, but it has been documented that they list one hundred and fifteen million (yes, million) confirmed friendships each and every day. What this means is that somebody you know knows someone else, and they want to be your online friend. No matter how you slice it, that’s a lot of friends. Could it be that our world has become way too electronic, and face-to-face friendships have gone by the wayside? I’m not implying that I don’t like Facebook, however, friends that you can share with, cry with, and see face-to-face make all the difference in the world. How many up-close and personal friends do you have? Do you have someone you can talk to on a regular basis when you need help? Call us if you don’t. Comment here.

Anger Management

Do you get angry easily? Do you lash out verbally or physically when pushed too far? One must be careful about anger. Is there a just cause, such as when someone’s innocence is violated or the helpless are being taken advantage of? Oftentimes, our anger is about personal offenses; not getting our own way, having someone disagree with us, or having what we feel is our right taken away from us. This kind of anger is usually counterproductive physically, emotionally, and socially. Learn to know the warning signs of your anger before you go too far with your reactions. Need help? Travel Plans

Ah, summertime. The sun shines, things grow, and fruit is plentiful at roadside stands. It’s a great time for lemonade, watermelon, grilling, camping, water recreation and vacationing! During one vacation, my older brother was driving us from Oakland to San Diego, California to visit relatives. We got as far as Modesto when the engine overheated. It seemed as if we spent half a day waiting for the garage to pressure-flush the block and radiator before we were back on the road. If we had prepared the car properly, we’d have been spared the aggravation, time lost and an extra night in a motel. As important as it is to prepare for a vacation trip however, preparing for other things is even more important. There is one trip we all must take, yet many have made no preparation to ensure a positive outcome. Know what that is? Comment here.

The Nature of Lust

For the OTR driver there are many temptations while at the truck stop. The Internet also makes access to pornographic sites too easy. The curious look may seem harmless, but the images will grab thoughts, seduce and “hook” a person’s will. Soon, like a slave, he returns over and over again. What satisfied yesterday will not satisfy tomorrow. The viewer will want more. It’s the nature of lust. Pornography soon degenerates into an insatiable addiction. Men addicted to pornography often become adulterous or seek out prostitutes, because the wife will be unable or unwilling to comply with the demands. Marriages are destroyed and families are torn apart as everyone suffers. This is a vicious cycle; one no man should walk into with his eyes open. Please give us a call and let us help you break the cycle. Comment here.

Choose Your Style

Every driver has their own style. Drivers pick the lane they prefer to travel in, they choose when to gear down or up, and even when to turn their lights on or off. These are all choices a driver makes after considering safety, equipment requirements, and personal preference. Drivers choose their lifestyles as well. Their upbringing, environment, and what they have been taught influence this. What type of lifestyle have you chosen? Choose wisely, as your lifestyle affects not only you, but your family and those with whom you work. If you need help in this area, please give us a call. Comment here.

Recovering After an Accident

Text messages were sent back and forth on the cell phone of a 17-year-old driver moments before her sport-utility vehicle crossed lanes and slammed head-on into a truck, killing her and four other high school graduates. The media focused, and rightly so, on the tragedy for the families involved in losing young daughters and on the topic of texting while driving. But not much information was given about the driver involved. How does a driver deal with the emotional and mental stress of such a tragic accident? It will take time to heal and for the images to fade, and it will take support from family, friends, and maybe a professional. If you, or someone you know, have been involved in a serious accident, don’t try to deal with the after-effects on your own. Give us a call and let us help you get started on the road to emotional wellness again. Comment here.

Gambling: Don’t Bet On It

Let’s talk about addiction to gambling. This can be a very touchy subject because of all the legalized ways to do it these days in areas like casinos, daily lottery games, and a wide variety of sporting events. The vision of financial freedom is just around the corner with each and every wager. It always seems so close and might very well happen the next time around. To make matters worse, when you get a taste of winning, this only fuels the gambling high. I read stories about lottery winners who squandered everything away and life is now worse than it was before. Gambling can become an addiction which brings devastation to families from every neighborhood. Don’t get caught up in gambling. Not only will your wallet appreciate it, you and your family will as well. Let us know if we can help. Comment here.

Break Free

Prison inmates can become what is known as ‘institutionalized’. They become so conditioned to life on the inside of a prison that they become afraid of any kind of change. When paroled, it’s hard for them to adjust to living outside on their own. Sometimes a person can get so comfortable with living in a state of brokenness that they’re too afraid to leave it. Is there something so familiar to you that you’re too afraid to change and therefore you miss out on becoming whole? It may be a toxic relationship or being forced to push the legal limits just to keep your job. In the long run, these things will cause more hurt and brokenness in your life, but you can take the proper steps now to make a change. We are available to help you take the first step to break free. Traits of Addiction

As we address many different types of addictions, many of them follow a similar downward pattern. Let me share with you the five identifiable traits of addiction:
·         The first one is your focus, much of which is directed toward that one thing.
·         The second one is tolerance. You find that you don’t mind those things that at one time had bothered you.
·         Number three is denial. You can’t see the problem and won’t recognize it even when others point it out to you.
·         Number four is consequences. Even though you endure terrible consequences, you still won’t admit you have a problem.
·         And last but not least, is painful withdraw. If you don’t get what you are addicted to, you become irritated, angry, suffer anxiety attacks, and get depressed.
Don’t let it come to this; seek help before it’s too late. Comment here.

Proactive Drivers

A good truck driver will pay attention to their surroundings so they can be proactive to avoid incidents. For instance, if you notice someone ahead tailgating, you know that you need to allow extra space or maneuver away from those vehicles. It is a potential hazard waiting to happen. A good truck driver will also pay attention to the state of their marriage and family life. They will notice if there are potential hazards that need to be addressed before leaving for a long haul and when to steer away from something that could possibly harm their marriage relationship. They will be proactive with their days off at home by planning ahead to spend time with their spouse and children. Let us know how we can help you be a good driver, spouse, and parent, and avoid problems before they start. Comment here.

What’s In Your Wallet?

The Credit Card Accountability, Responsibility, and Disclosure Act, which was enacted last year, will go into effect soon. What does this mean for you? One thing is that credit card companies now have a cap on what they can charge a customer for late fees and penalty charges. The new cap is twenty five dollars on all late payments. This, theoretically, will keep companies from taking advantage of cash-strapped customers, and at first glance, seems beneficial. However, it does not correct the problem of why people end up in this financial predicament in the first place. If you find yourselves making late payments or minimal payments on your credit card bills, give us a call. There is a better solution other than capping your penalties and making the minimum payment.
