However, since he had certain attachments to his truck, he decided to rebuild the engine and get a few more years out of it. The same thing could be said about marriage. At times, when you and your spouse aren’t getting along or have become more like roommates, it may be tempting to think about having something newer or better. During these times, remember your initial commitment when you first became husband and wife. Focus on those things that first attracted you to your spouse. While parked on a busy city street, I watched as a husband stepped into the street between his wife and the cars whizzing by so she could safely slip inside the door. A seemingly small act, but it demonstrated his desire to protect her and make sure she was safe. Have you ever had your spouse do something which continually goes against what you believe is best? Typically when spouses differ on any type of issue, it’s time to sit down and hash it out until an agreement can be reached. How do you talk to your spouse? How would you like to be talked to? I have found, but not mastered, that speaking to your spouse in a way that builds them up always works the best. The opposite of this is to speak to them in ways that tear them down. This will always hurt your significant other and your relationship in deeper ways than you might think. When you are in a heated discussion, this concept can be very difficult to remember. I’d like to share with you what I believe the “roles” in a marriage should be. Let me state, first of all, that just because there are different roles, it doesn’t make one better or greater than the other. Just like the Armed Forces, there are different ranks, and as each one works together to complete its own responsibilities, the larger goal gets accomplished. The structure and teamwork displayed in football simply amazes me. Some say “The best offense is a good defense.” It’s sure exciting to see a defensive lineman recover a fumble and run it in for a touchdown. However, this type of action is not the goal for a defensive player. Their objective is to guard their territory and prevent the other team from advancing.

Do you love your spouse? Can I ask you how you love them? There are three types of love. The first type is called agape which means to love someone unconditionally. No matter what you choose to love someone anyway. In other words, your love is not dependant on how they act or what they have done. The second type is called Philia for friendship. Recently, as I listened to a discussion between a man and his wife, I thought about the makeup of men and women. Men are naturally right-brained. Distinctions of being right-brained are remembering things we see and do, as well as putting bits of information together to understand the big picture. Women on the other hand are primarily left-brained. Some of those traits are understanding and using language (listening, reading, speaking and writing), a memory for spoken and written messages, and a detailed analysis of all the information.
Now that you know this, what should you do with it? How about using that knowledge to help you communicate effectively in your marriage? Sometimes, there are exceptions to these traits. So, get to know how your spouse thinks. Then, learn to communicate to her using the way she thinks. You won’t regret it. Comment here.

I once heard a speaker explain why so many have marital difficulties. He stated that somewhere within the marriage there was a lack of love on the husband’s part or a lack of respect on the wife’s part. This started a vicious cycle that we can’t break out of. Quite often, my wife and I have conversations that don’t make sense. Although I’ve listened intently, somewhere along the line, I missed something. Well, I’ve come to the conclusion that men and women think and speak differently. “Really” you say, like you didn’t know this already. I looked at my neighbor’s lawn the other day and noticed his grass looked much greener. I struggle to keep the crab grass and clover out of mine, while his always looks so nice. I went over to find out what he did to his lawn. As I got closer, suddenly I noticed that it didn’t look as nice as it did before. He had problems with his lawn too. Surprisingly, they were pretty close to the ones I was having, along with a few others. After some polite conversation, I turned around to head home. Amazingly, I saw that my lawn looked really nice from his yard. Isn’t that the way marriage is too? Sometimes your marriage doesn’t appear to be all that good when compared to others. A television show called “The Starter Wife” revolves around a recently divorced woman and her daughter starting a new life together. The characters confront the many difficulties that follow a divorce such as emotional pain, financial shortfalls and parenting complications. As truck drivers, we’ve experienced rude people on the highways. Whether someone cuts you off, flashes an improper hand gesture or just mouths nasty words, we have all either seen or been victim to road rudeness before. Given the size difference between my truck and most four-wheelers, it always amazes me to see some of the rude and erratic driving habits. Maybe you’ve been rude to someone on the highway yourself? Let me ask you this: Since we know how it feels when someone is rude to us, why would we do it to anyone else? That’s especially true with marriage. There is absolutely no room for rudeness in our marriages. Search your past behavior for signs of rudeness and then get rid of all traces of it from your life. Have you heard the expression “It’s the thought that counts?” Well, I beg to differ. Early in my marriage, I tried to use this idea to excuse myself. Men, please don’t try this at home! I would forget to buy her a birthday or an anniversary present. Now, I had thought about it but I didn’t actually do it. When she asked me about it, I would say “Well, I thought about buying you a gift, isn’t that what counts?” The answer was always a resounding “NO!” It seems as if remembering important dates or events is harder for men than it is women, but that’s no excuse. We have all heard or used certain phrases or words to describe our marriage. Let me give you one that I think sums up the kind that make it for the long haul. That word is committed. Don’t get me wrong, there will be times of difficulties, stress, loneliness and doubts during the course of our marriage. These rough roads could very easily put us on a detour from our original course of “till death do us part”. Don’t let that happen, stay committed to your spouse and to the promise you made. Other words that will make commitment easier are words like love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self control. How do you talk to your spouse? Do you focus on the negative or the positive? My dad used to tell me “if you don’t have anything nice to say, don’t say anything at all.” When our marriages aren’t going well, our first response is often to be judgmental or disappointed towards our mate. This only adds to the problem. There is a time to question our spouses when the load of our marriage gets too heavy, but we must cautiously pick those times and do it in a loving manner (this might even require someone else’s help). Are you experiencing anger in your marriage? It’s hard enough to maintain open communication in a marriage when you are home every day, not to mention while out on the road. Are you angry or bitter with your wife or husband? Is there resentment in your marriage? Let me assure you that there is no faster way to an unhappy marriage than to let resentment and bitterness move in and stay. Don’t get me wrong, there might be some very legitimate issues in your marriage that cause you to be angry and question your spouse. It could be about your career choice, money (or lack thereof), doubt, children, family members, infidelity or a lack of trust. These have to be addressed right away. Don’t let them fester. Who is the most important person in your home--You or your spouse? Whose needs and desires come first? Your love for your spouse should be so great that you always, and I mean always, think of their needs first. Oh, I know that’s not easy. We are not programmed that way. Society says you should put yourself first. You’ve heard the slogans:” You deserve a break today” or “Have it your way”. But this kind of attitude is not right. If your marriage is going to work, you need to love your spouse more than yourself. This means thinking of them daily, making sure that they know you’re thinking of them, and going out of your way to make sure you are meeting their needs. Do you know what your spouse’s needs are? This is a great place to start. Ask. This will let your spouse know how much you care. When both spouses seek to meet each other’s needs, everyone’s needs are met. Sometimes it seems the demands that drivers face each and every day are worlds apart from the demands that their spouses handle at home. If not managed well by both partners, these “separate” paths could easily tear the marriage apart. While you’re out on the road, life at home is full of appointments, deadlines, bills, family issues, little league games and sometimes problems. We have all heard that when you get married two now become one. What does this really mean? How can we become one person? You are quite often separated by hundreds of miles and aren’t home long enough to become one. This is extremely hard as a driver, but not impossible. Look for ways to connect every day. It is easier today than ever before with the technology that is available. Driver, are you thinking of getting married while living on the road? You’ll face some additional challenges within your marriage that others simply won’t.
